Norman Orr (1924-1993)Born in Edinburgh on 11 June, 1924, Norman Orr was a time served apprentice in the glass industry. Lying about his age, he joined the Marines when he was only 17 and after serving with them in the Second World War, he joined Edinburgh Crystal. He designed glass patterns for the company and also learned to cut and engrave glass. He remained with Edinburgh Crystal until he was 40, when, frustrated at the lack of artistic freedom he was given, he left the company and took evening classes at Edinburgh College of Art, where he studied glass engraving under Helen Monro Turner. She immediately saw his potential, and encouraged him to study drawing and painting at the college as well as glass engraving. By the1960s, he had become one of Europe's finest glass engravers, and his exquisite engravings on crystal slabs and goblets found their way into many important private collections around the world, including that of Her Majesty the Queen and the Queen Mother. The golfer Jack Nicklaus was also a patron. In addition to his glass, he produced watercolour and oils and designed a set of Christmas cards for the Drambuie drinks company. Norman Orr worked almost exclusively for private commissions and, as a result, his glass is rarely seen nowadays. His finest engravings feature animals and his distinctive realism is unmistakable. He also produced fine drawings of animals. He died in 1993. Examples of his work shown here . Two drawings by Norman Orrfrom the early 1960s.1.
