George Watson's College, Edinburgh. H M Turner studied at this college. Size: approximately, 30" 760mm high, 12" 305mm wide Photo by Stuart MacLaren, George Watson's College, and copyright ©2010 George Watson's College. Additional information from Brian Blench: John Lawrie said of the panel: 'The stained glass panel could be by HT. The little men are so like her style of woodcuts. There is an interesting squiggle in the bottom border third from the right, that is different from the rest of the stipple painting. Sideways on it could be a date and part hidden under the putty. It could be salvaged from an old window. I don't recall HT doing stained glass commissions. I have a panel of hers when she was a student, and she could have made the window during her time at college.' Brian Blench adds: 'On another look, the style is similar to the illustrations for Sir George Dasent's Tales From the North, Nelson, 1933 (NLS reference T193d). You might also like to compare it with her illustrations in the same year to the Nelson edition of Charles Kingsley's The Heroes (NLS Ref T193h).' |
