PY1024 Perth Arms

Monart paperweight PY1024 by Paul Ysart

Kevin Holt has offered his opinion that this is a Paul Ysart weight. He says:

The way the canes are set level with the ground is a good indication of Paul's work, as is the quality of the setting of the suplhide - with not too many bubbles around it. Pity that there is only the one cane type used and that it is a basic cane - that makes it more difficult to be sure it is by Paul.

The stress lines radiating out from beneath the label are probably consistent with Paul's finishing, but I have seen radial lines out the edge of a central area that ties in with Salvador's methods. Hard to be sure, but I favour Paul for these stress lines.

No way, I suppose, to tell whether the label was applied pre- or post-war.

I know of another weight with a Perth Coat of Arms sulphide (or maybe it was a brass badge?) but that one had Vasart canes and twists (at least, I have not seen the same canes and twists in Paul's items). That could have been made pre-war rather than first-period Vasart, but the look of it was more like Salvador's hand than Paul's.

On balance, I would go with Paul for this latest one.
