David Kaplan, a glass artist from New York who had studied at Orrefors and the Edinburgh College of Art, and Darryle Hinze setup Lindean Mill Glass in 1977. Darryle left a year later to set up a studio Denmark. Annica Sandström was born in 1954 in Örnsköldsvik. She attended the School of Art Craft and Design Stockholm 1975–1976, and did a training course at Orrefors Glass School, where she met David Kaplan. Annica joined David in 1978, and the early production was glasses and tableware. In the 90s they developed their 'Graal' technique but continued to produce an extensive range of colourful hand-blown glassware; examples of their work is shown in the catalogue here . They also produced coloured cased crystal blanks for artist Alison Kinnaird. The Graal technique is cameo with an overlay, and was pioneered by Orrefors. David made the blanks and Annica sandblasted the designs. This is one of the most difficult glass decorating techniques and always commands high prices. It is also one of the most exciting techniques to be seen in glass. Each year, they made a new design; only a small number of each were produced. When I last visited them, in 1995, David was working but Annica had taken a few years off to raise a family, during this period no new Graal was being made. After a lot of experimentation fused glass 'graal' panels were first produced in 1996 and were later used in the Millenium Clock - clock face, side panels and the eyes in the crypt. See website. The clock can now be seen in the Royal Museum in Edinburgh. Art works have been shown in many exhibitions across the UK, in Europe, Tokyo, Malaysia and the USA. Pieces are also held in numerous, prestigious public collections, including those of the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Crafts Council Collection, the Contemporary Art Society and the Royal Scottish Museum.
