Glass articles - Glass Makers and Artists |
During the ECA conference Mike Hunter gave two glassmaking demonstrations. The first demonstration was held in the Hot Glass Studio at Edinburgh College of Art at 15:30 on Saturday the 2nd of October 2010 and Mike made two paperweights - A closepack millefiori and a flower weight, see videos of this one too. The second demonstration was held in the Hot Glass Studio at Edinburgh College of Art at 11:30 on Monday the 4th of October 2010. The vessel was made as a demonstration of the ‘Pastorale Pick-up Technique’.
This piece was made as a demonstration of the ‘Pastorale Pick-up Technique’. A highly skilled technique rarely seen in the UK but of which Mike Hunter is a master. The canes and murrine are laid out on a plate, heated and fused together, a very heavy job as it must be constantly re-heated. Once the gaps are closed it is measured to get the size of the pick-up. Further work is carried out after the pick-up to close all gaps to allow it to be closed and blown. The blown vessel is transferred to another punty iron, the top is picked-up and fused before opening and final blowing and shaping. This piece took 45 minutes to fashion, excluding substantial preparation and finishing.Larger images (in preparation) |
Mike Hunter rarely makes this type of weight so it was a special treat for conference delegates to experience this in a crowded demonstration. The canes used in this weight were made by Mike Hunter and Arran Hunter. The remaining blue gather was then used to create a second paperweight, see below. Larger images see here. |
The paperweight has trailed green surface decoration and millefiori flowers. It was impressive to wathc the lampwork being applied and formed on the surface of the glass. Larger images see here. Viideos of this demonstration are shown at the end of this page. |
A few pieces of their recent work were shown to the audience in the demonstrations.
