FAQs - Site Information

Building a Community

Currently the site is run by a small team; by extending that team this site can last forever!

Other researchers or writers who would like to add and manage their own content or articles directly, please contact me via the Contact option to discuss. Translation or editing services will also be appreciated.

Especially cool will be a Gaelic speaker to translate the site navigation, not articles... although Tongue out that could be cool too!

Any number of tasks can be shared and anyone without technophobia could become a manager working behind the scenes to build and extend the site. Another administrator(s) would also be welcomed but will need to be willing to take the time to understand how the software works. There are many parts of the site that can be worked on independently, for example:

  • Building the link's page – All you need to do is type a description, categorise and sort.
  • Extending the list – This suffers from not being comprehensive and needs all the entries to be researched and validated by references. You would be adding data to a database, which is fairly straightforward but with its quirks!
  • Article stimulators – Get in touch with those working in the industry and persuade them to submit articles or sufficient material to create an article with images.
  • Writers – To write on any Scottish glass subject. We have many stub articles that need material adding... Or more stubs to get names that are not mentioned elsewhere available.
  • News editor – To seek out and publish news items
  • Column writer – To write a regular or occasional column or blog on the site
  • Legal advice – Almost nothing to do but better to have some input than none!
  • Sponsorship – Donate to a fund that will soon be established to cover the sites cost from the fund's income.
  • Graphic design – We still use the basic default as all of the available time is spent on adding content and maintaining the software and database.
  • Technical support – Web savvy, PHP programming, any skills that can be employed
  • Copyright support – Keep an eye open for abuse of our own IP rights and those of our writers, contributors and exhibitors. (Anyone can let us know if they see material copied from our site without consent.)
  • Translators – Gaelic would be a super addition. Would other languages be useful for the site navigation/interface? French, German, Spanish, Italian... tell us.

Or perhaps you have other ideas? We are open, please post suggestions in the Forum for public discussion!

As some of these roles also give various levels of control over the site, we will need to be assured of your integrity through references or recommendations. As a part of our informal unstructured team you should also be happy to have your name in the public domain.

The site philosophy is:

  • To provide space for a community of Scottish glass interests.
  • To stimulate interest in Scottish glass, past, present and future.
  • To provide a showcase for any individual, company or organisation to freely advertise their activities.
  • To provide good quality images with multiple views and no limitations on quantity or imposed editorial policy.
  • To not impose censorship except where laws are breached. But we will not shy from controversial art.
  • To respect everyone's intellectual property. We do not take ownership of any copyright beyond layout and material where the copyright is given to the site.

The scope of this site is GLASS and some SCOTTISH relationship.

This means that someone who was born, trained or worked with glass in Scotland can be included. This helps to show how Scottish influence has spread and how external influences have been integrated. Glassworkers have allways come from afar and travelled afar. We cover collectible glass, glass art, historical, archeological, industrial, crafts, window glass, education, etc. without limitation.
