Glass articles - John Moncrieff Limited |
What happens when fake collectables get forgotten about?Twelve of the fake Monart vases made, probably in London, for a Perth based dealer in 1988/89 were sold at Salisbury Auction house Woolley and Wallis on the 21st of September 2011. The auction house had reasonably described them as Perthshire miniatures with applied Monart labels and a realistic estimate of £50. But eager bidders were clearly unaware of this notorious piece of Monart history and the hammer price reached was £550! Fake labelsLabels used on these were also faked using offset printing on self adhesive labels, the ink rubs off when rubbed with the thumb. Experienced collectors would recognise that the glass is of a different 'feel' to genuine Monart and that while very clever copies these do not match the way that genuine Monart of this size was produced. Colours are good matches and are probably by Kügler as used at Moncrieff and still in use today. New informationSince publishing this news item I received a reliable report that the miniatures were still being produced in small quantities as late as 1991 and at that time in Perthshire. Larger piece were also made in the same colourways including inkwells and powder bowls.
