Born in Edinburgh in 1961, Jane Charles first studied at Leeds College of Art, from where she graduated in 1979. She then studied at West Surrey College of Art, Farnham, in 1980, before taking a degree in multidisciplinary art and design, specialising in glass, at North Staffordshire Polytechnic from 1981 to 1983. Jane was the first student representative on the British Artists in Glass committee. She studied glass techniques and technology at Dudley College in the West Midlands in 1983 and went on to establish Jane Charles Studio Glass in Edinburgh in 1987. In 1990, she moved her studio to Newcastle. Public collections of her work include Glasgow Museums (Kelvingrove).
