David HurryMaster Glassmakerby David R. HurryDavid Hurry was born in Stromness, the Orkney Isles, in 1957.From early 1975 until August 1979, David worked at the Harland Glassworks, Caithness, as an apprentice to Paul Ysart. The first few months were spent working together at the blowlamp while the furnace was being prepared. The two then spent equal amounts of time working at the blowlamp and producing paperweights. Paul and David made many weights for Paul Jokelsen and also for collectors in the USA. These included weights containing snakes, flowers, swimming fish (single, double and treble), white mice with cheese, butterflies, bouquets of flowers, dragonflies and lizards on rocks, and also 3D weights with latticino. These all contained the PY cane. At the same time, they were also producing various weights for the home market that contained the H cane. Being a perfectionist, Paul promptly destroyed any 'seconds'. In September 1979, David moved to Norway to work at the Hadeland Glassworks in Jevnaker. Hadeland is one of Norway's oldest glassworks: it started up in 1762. Initially, David learnt the 'industrial' glass trade and spent most of his time making wine glasses. In 1983, he was made a 'master', and Hadeland gave him his own workshop. He stayed at Hadeland until 1990. Over the next few years, David moved around Norway refining his glassmaking skills, which included a return to Hadeland:
In 2002, David and his wife, Vibece, opened ViDa Glass in Moss, Jeloy, Norway. Vibece also has many years of experience in glassmaking. Together, they make paperweights and art glass using various techniques. David has his own website here LINK Orange swirl plate |
